We are learning about Diwali, the Hindu "festival of lights". It is held in honour of Lakshmi the goddess of wealth and prosperity.
We listened to the story of Rama and Sita. The story shows how good wins over evil. It is the story about Prince Rama and his wife Princess Sita who were banished from their home in Ayodhya by their father the king. They were banished for fourteen years. Sita was kidnapped by the ten-headed demon Ravana. With the help of the monkey warrior Hanuman, Rama rescues his wife. The people of Ayodhya lit divas (oil lamps) in rows to guide Rama and Sita back from the forest. On their return Rama was crowned king.
People decorate outside their homes and temples with Rangoli patterns. Hindus hope that the goddess Lakshmi will visit their homes.
We invited Mrs Dodia to share how her family celebrates Diwali. She showed us how she dresses up in a sari suit. We tasted some Indian sweets and listened to a couple of Indian music.
We had fun dancing and having a go at copying the dance movements of Jai Ho.
Fireworks are also lit during Diwali. We made firework printing using paint and a little bit of glitter. We also created firework pictures using 2Simple's Splash program.
