Today, we started our new topic of 'Living Things and their Habitats' in Science. We began our topic by investigating the different ways we can classify living things. These included type of animal (eg. amphibians or reptiles) and features of the animal.

This week in Maths, Year Four have been learning how to order decimals. We used counting sticks to order decimals to one decimal place then used this to help us place decimals to two decimal places on the counting stick.

We've got mail! Last term, Year Four wrote persuasive leaflets trying to convince Prince Harry to join us for Fun Day this year. We arrived back to school with a photo and a lovely letter from Kensington Palace informing us that Prince Harry had been "touched by our generous words of support" and he was "extremely grateful for the children's kind invitation." Unfortunately, however, he is unable to join us this year because he is so busy.

PSHE in Year 4 – ‘Healthy and Safer Lifestyles’: Smoking. We played a 'true' / 'false' game to see if we already knew anything about the drug called nicotine found in tobacco.

Smoking less than 20 cigarettes each day won’t hurt you.

Nicotine makes a smoker’s heart beat faster.

People who do not smoke can be harmed by breathing in the smoke of others.

A woman who smokes when she is pregnant can hurt her unborn baby.

Every cigarette smoked shortens your life by about 14 minutes!

The class eflected on the following scenario with reasons why 'grandad' might have begun smoking along with what advice he and his family could be given. 'Grandad started smoking when he was 13. He understands it is harmful to himself and his family but has struggled to quit the habit. Whenever he visits his daughter and her family, he always goes outside when he wants a cigarette; whatever the weather! Mum is concerned because he has a bad chest and she worries that standing outside will make it worse.'
