During R.E on Friday we went to Saint Paul's Church. We learnt that buildings can be symbolic and become a special and sacred space. We also looked at many things Christians use in worship.
Natural History Museum Trip
As part of our Science learning, Year 1 went to see mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds and fish at the Natural History Museum. We became explorers in the Museum garden and we went on a Minibeast hunt.
In science we learnt that herbivores eat plants, carnivores eat meat and omnivores eat both plants and meat. We grouped the animals in a Venn diagram according to what they eat.
This week in Maths we have been learning about fractions. We learnt about one half and one quarter. We decorated a paper plate with our favourite food, then we cut the plate into one half or one quarter.
This week we learnt about a Christian celebration called Mardi Gras. We made Mardi Gras masks and answered some questions about the special celebration.
In Maths we have been learning about what multiplication means. We used cubes to make lots of 2s, 5s and 10s.
This week we went to St Paul’s Church to watch Clare demonstrate a baptism. Clare talked about what priests wear during a baptism, choosing God Parents, the holy water and the prayers that happen when a Christian baby is welcomed into the world.
We learnt about St James. We made and decorated a scallop shell. The scallop shell is the symbol of St James.
Design and Technology
In Geography, we used a map to find different countries in the United Kingdom. We used geographical vocabulary such as land, sea and beach to describe the different landscapes.
On the 11th of November we had a two minute silence to remember the soldiers who died in the war. We made poppies and stuck them together to make a wreath. We talked about why we wear poppies on Remembrance Day.
In RE we were learning about the Jewish celebration of Succot. We carried out a rotation of three different activities. In the first rotation, we designed our own Sukkah on paper. A Sukkah is a special shelter that Jewish people build with their families in their garden. In the second rotation we made a Sukkah out of bread and avocado. In the third rotation we talked about Succot, drew pictures and wrote words to show our understanding of the festival.
June Savage, one of our school Governors, visited our classroom to see all the fun learning that we were doing.
