CLAY HOUSES
We began by exploring clay and finding out what it could do. We flattened the clay using rolling pins, used our hands to shape the clay and made different marks by pressing into it with tools.
We also had a go at making a model of our own.
Next we looked at the work of the 3D artist Rachel Whiteread.
She makes sculptures by pouring plaster inside objects in a process called ‘casting’. We focused on her 1993 piece, called ‘House’.
Next we designed a tile of a house that we would then make out of clay.
We thought about how we would make the door, windows and roof and labelled our designs.
In the final lesson, we made a 3D clay time from our drawn designs.
We added features by pressing in using various tools and objects, as well as joining clay onto the tile’s surface using the ‘score and slip’ technique.

LIFE IN COLOUR
We began by learning about primary colours and how these can be mixed to produce secondary colours. We then made orange, purple and green by mixing primary colours in different combinations.
We learned about texture and thought about how we can create different textures using things like forks, sponges, cotton buds and scrunched up paper.
We then cut out shapes from the textured painted sheets we made and created collages of the African savannah in pairs.
We thought carefully about where to position the pieces and discussed the composition of our collages with our partners.
Our drawing project was called ‘Tell a story’.
We began by using charcoal to create different marks.
We thought about how we could represent different words through our mark making with charcoal, including ‘fast’, ‘powerful’, ‘tiny’ and ‘gentle’.
We then learned about how different mark making techniques, such as cross-hatching, stippling and circular scribbling can be used to create texture.
We practised these and then sketched objects like shells and pine cones, thinking about how we could show the surface texture of these using our new skills.
We learned how to draw different expressions and how these can portray the emotions of a character. We then drew story characters.
