Understanding the World

EYFS Statutory Educational Programme: Understanding the world involves guiding children to make sense of their physical world and their community. The frequency and range of children’s personal experiences increases their knowledge and sense of the world around them – from visiting parks, libraries and museums to meeting important members of society such as police officers, nurses and firefighters. In addition, listening to a broad selection of stories, non-fiction, rhymes and poems will foster their understanding of our culturally, socially, technologically and ecologically diverse world. As well as building important knowledge, this extends their familiarity with words that support understanding across domains. Enriching and widening children’s vocabulary will support later reading comprehension.

Life Cycles

We have been growing cress seeds. We needed the seeds, kitchen towel, water and cling film.

We have been observing.

We coloured a Chinese New Year card.

We made Chinese lanterns by cutting a red card and shaping it by joining up the ends.

We learned that plum blossoms are important for the Chinese. We painted plum blossoms using paintbrushes and our fingers.

We noticed that our playground changed! It is frosty. It sounded crunchy when we walked on it and it was slippery. We noticed ice and "snow"

Introduction of our new topic

Our theme is magical journeys. We pretend to be pirates who are going to travel around the world in search of treasure and have an adventure!

The teachers gave possible ideas that children can engage in while in the role play area through role playing.

Polar bear, black bear, sun bear, sloth bear? What kind of bears do we know?

The Reception class learned that there are many kinds of bears. We found that there are Polar bears, Grizzly bears, Sun bear, Sloth bear, Panda bears, Black bears and Spectacled bear. Then we draw our favourite ones.

Remember, remember the 5th of November

The Reception class is learning about Sparkler safety. We learned that we have to be with grown ups when playing with sparklers, wear gloves when holding it and put the sparkler stick in water, not in the bin, when it is finished. And we must not play with matches or lighters at all.

We are learning about Diwali.

K thought of transporting a block using the push bike.
